Pedestrian Wind Comfort Assessment Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations With Varying Number of Wind Directions

The construction of a building inevitably changes the microclimate in its vicinity. Many city authorities request comprehensive wind studies before granting permit, which can be obtained through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Investigating conditions for 12 directions has previously been considered sufficient most literature and industry. However, effect changing number simulated is still not well understood. This article investigates influence on pedestrian comfort maps. A neighborhood Niigata city, Japan, was chosen as case study. Simulations are performed OpenFOAM using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model realizable k- ? turbulence model. inlet profiles form homogeneous atmospheric boundary layer with neutral stratified logarithmic velocity profile. maps converging toward final map more included. area classified same 64 79% 4 directions, 92% 8 96% 16 99% 32 directions. greater understanding included may enable efficient that recognize associated uncertainties.
